This is currently my favorite set of sci-fi short stories. This is my second time reading it. I bought a Kindle copy back in 2010 and Ted Chiang’s ability to take something familiar in a completely unexpected direction captivated me.
When Arrival came out, Chiang’s stories finally came back into print, so I picked up a physical copy and read through them again. They captivated me just as much the second time through. Chiang masterfully makes mind-bending concepts come alive and makes you feel like you are living in the story by the time you finish it.
I also love that Chiang includes notes for his stories at the end of the book, going a little deeper on what inspired each story. I wish more authors would do that.
This collection of short stories made me want to try my hand at writing my own, so I’m working on a few outlines right now. I’ll probably read some of my favorite stories in this collection for a third time to take stylistic and plot notes.
